About this artwork
Miroitement. The French carries something my mother tongue doesn't quite manage on its own - not just shimmer, but the specific flicker of light caught and thrown back by a moving surface, water most of all.
I worked the lower band in an interference and iridescence gold, a pigment that does not hold one colour under ordinary light. Move past it, and it shifts, warmer or cooler depending on where you stand and what the light is doing that hour.…
Sage through the top two-thirds, a break of warm orange where sky meets water, rose and plum beneath, darker where the paint pooled. Nine inches wide, three tall, small enough to hold in one hand.
The piece floats under museum glass in a slim black frame, lifted just off its backing so the edges and the texture of the paint stay in view - less a window sealed shut than a small opening onto something larger, especially here, where the light itself keeps moving across the surface.

I paint what I feel. After a life in finance, the palette knife became my primary way of speaking, plainly, without ornament. My subject is land, sea, and sky, held less as record than as memory of standing inside them.
I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
