I painted this piece with a palette knife, layering atmosphere and texture until the scene felt alive. What emerged is something between representation and abstraction—a rhapsody of water, light, and air. The moody sky holds much of the emotion: restless and full of movement, shaped by the immediacy and sculptural quality of knife work. Raised surfaces catch the light in shifting ways, creating a quiet rhythm. The shoreline grounds the piece with… earthy greens and browns that offset the cool sky above.
If there’s a narrative in Shoreline Rhapsody, it’s one of quiet contemplation—a moment before the storm, or just after. I don’t aim for polish so much as presence; that rawness often feels truer than a perfect finish. This painting is part of my ongoing journey into the edges of place and self.
Framed under glass in a black floating frame, the work is gently elevated from its backing, inviting close attention like a fragment of memory preserved.
Though I am creating art, I am evoking an emotion. That conviction has guided fifteen years of practice. Robert Venafro's work prioritises the felt experience over representation, capturing atmospheric depth that moves between tranquillity, longing, and awe. You do not simply look at these paintings. You enter them. Working exclusively with a knife, his self-taught mastery of Impasto produces surfaces that are sculpturesque, tactile, and alive. Expansive oil paintings and intimate miniatures share the same driving force: a sense of place that is as much interior as it is geographical. Landscapes and seascapes become the language. Emotion is what they say. Now in his seventh decade, Venafro has arrived at Ipseity, absolute selfhood, hard-earned and uncompromising. Drawing from a life in finance before the brush became his primary language, he brings something rare to the canvas. The story he is painting is his emotion. And yours, to discover. www.venafrobob.com
