About this artwork
Whispers in Green
In this painting, I worked entirely with a palette knife, letting layers of green build like soft geologic strata—scraped, shaped, and pressed into place. As I worked, I found myself thinking about chlorophyll: once alive, now long gone, transformed into pigment, into colour, into memory. These greens are more than just paint—they’re echoes of what once breathed.
This piece is both quiet and vital—an expression of the living world… and a meditation on time, memory, and renewal. The undulating textures and atmospheric tones are meant to evoke the serenity of a wind-swept meadow, while also hinting at the ancient life that came before.
Framed under glass in a black floating frame, the painting is gently elevated from its backing, inviting close attention, like a fragment of the past preserved.
Though I am creating art, I am evoking an emotion. That conviction has guided fifteen years of practice. Robert Venafro's work prioritises the felt experience over representation, capturing atmospheric depth that moves between tranquillity, longing, and awe. You do not simply look at these paintings. You enter them. Working exclusively with a knife, his self-taught mastery of Impasto produces surfaces that are sculpturesque, tactile, and alive. Expansive oil paintings and intimate miniatures share the same driving force: a sense of place that is as much interior as it is geographical. Landscapes and seascapes become the language. Emotion is what they say. Now in his seventh decade, Venafro has arrived at Ipseity, absolute selfhood, hard-earned and uncompromising. Drawing from a life in finance before the brush became his primary language, he brings something rare to the canvas. The story he is painting is his emotion. And yours, to discover. www.venafrobob.com
