About this artwork
It was so remarkable to find this cowrie shell laying in the street on my back from the her show, as these shells feature prominently in her work. I immediately connected this find to her work, as a… sign and lovely coincide. A chance find to which I immediately bought my own meaning.
Represented in embroidery and coloured pencil, I have given the shell a kind of interconnected skirt, in reference to Leigh's sculptural work with the figure.
Here, a natural object, out of its original context, is rediscovered as a poetic essay, echoing the magificence and simplicity of her sculpture.
The art work has a thoughtful and understated energy, while at the same time creating a conversation piece about its title, for any room it inhabits.
