The Broken Woman is a unique sculpture representing a woman who is unsure of her identity, who feels both man and woman, unable to define herself. This creates an inner conflict, a chasm; sometimes leading to surgery and gender reassignment, other times to a constant struggle. It is crafted from hard olive wood, with a natural slate base and a polished and gilded brass head. I draw attention to the loop created by her head—her mind—it keeps turning…pain.…
When a new piece of wood arrives at the workshop, we're always excited about how it will come to life. In this sculpture, the toughest challenge was cutting the olive trunk lengthwise to give the piece the appropriate dramatic effect. It took several days of doubt, meditation, and reflection. Once a cut is made in wood, it's irreversible; it can't be changed. The cut must be clean and precise. It's the moment when the sculptor decides between the life and death of the sculpture. This carving came from a single piece.
