About this artwork
This remarkable portrait of Velazquez with the title "El Primo" from 1645 shows a short man in an elevated position at the court of Phillips IV. It is noteworthy that Velazquez portrayed court jesters and short servants at this time, giving them almost statesmanlike dignity and gives poise. In my picture, this portrait has already suffered a lot and shows clear signs of age, such as peeling paint and cracks in the canvas, which are all painted. The… framed picture behind it changes in the time plane and plays with the idea of classical and commercial art. It shows an image of a woman from a perfume advertisement. So in this picture temporal and content-related levels merge, which provide the viewer with very own approaches for an image interpretation.
« I like art that combines old and new, is professionally made, has a sense of humor, arouses curiosity, makes you smarter, and which you never forget. »
