About this artwork
With this oil painting, I captured the urban pulse and dynamism of the city. The realistic depiction of the subway trains against the evening light conveys the vibrant interplay of architecture and technology. The Michel is a landmark of Hamburg, my hometown. This church, which is actually called St. Michaelis, can be seen in the background. In front of it are two subway trains of the U3 line. This line runs right through the city center, very close…
to the buildings. I wanted to paint the lively everyday life with the subways and lights, together with this very old church.
The entire picture is painted in two layers of oil paint, which give it luminosity and depth.
The lights on the tracks, the reflections in the windows of the houses and trains make this image very dynamic, urban, and vibrant. This artwork brings energy and excitement into your home and serves as a reminder that the city is always in motion – full of life and possibilities.

« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
