About this artwork
This painting grew out of my habit of collecting fragments from fashion imagery such as poses, gestures, fascinating textiles, and letting them mutate into something more psychologically charged. Here, a figure holds a translucent bag that reveals the head of a pig, a motif I have often used as a cipher for ambiguity. I wasn’t interested in illustrating a narrative, but in exposing a tension: the way softness and beauty in commercial imagery can… slide into something unsettling, almost burdensome. The figure’s blurred face and the diffused colour field allow the emotional tone to stay unresolved, as if the image is drifting between care, display, and complicity. It’s one of the early works where I began to use fashion as a point of departure for thinking about how female bodies circulate as cultural commodities.
Gillian Holding, with a Fine Art degree from Leeds Metropolitan University and a background as a solicitor, works primarily in oil paint, embracing the physicality of her medium on both large canvases and intimate panels. Her instinctive, semi-abstract style blends drawing and painting, often depicting fragmented bodies in transition, using brushes and unconventional tools to leave areas unresolved and evoke emotional ambiguity. Through these painterly gestures, she explores themes of liminality and contradiction, ultimately conveying sensations of uncertainty, vulnerability, and the transformative potential found in life’s fissures and fractures.
