About this artwork
This small painting of a lizard is in egg tempera and gold leaf on an oak panel and has a plain wood border so that it can be displayed either framed or unframed.
During the height of the pandemic, the artist was lucky enough to be able to drive south to a cottage in Tarn et Garonne for a week. Because of tight restrictions, she was, for the most part, confined to the house and garden, so there was lots of time to draw.
While sketching plants… in the garden, she was often joined by small lizards, scuttling across the stones in the sun. It has taken some time for any of them to make it into her paintings, but with the summer beginning, it seemed the perfect moment to give a starring role to a lizard.
The painting is signed and dated on the revers and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
