About this artwork
Untitled – mixed media (rope, plaster, wood, color)
A group of white "hominids," arranged in three regular rows, are squeezed between two sturdy, knotted, hanging ropes. The central structure recalls an altar, a window, or perhaps a cage. The ropes, with their strong materiality, seem to hold the entire scene in tension, a symbol of constraint, control, or bondage.
The work speaks of order and imprisonment, but also of cohesion and silent resistance.… The use of blue dripping into the background introduces an emotional dimension: a restrained sadness, or perhaps a restrained spirituality.

Gastone Cecconello (Vercelli, 1942) has been working for over sixty years in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His visual language—based on the figure of the hominid as a metaphor for the human condition—arises from the dialogue between matter and symbol, between the archaic and the contemporary.
He has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad: Columbia University in New York, Staatsuniversität Hamburg, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, and Galerie Man Arte in Paris. Critic Pierre Restany has written about his work. His career is documented in the monograph Alle origini del mito (Silvana Editoriale, 2012).
At over eighty years old, he still works every day in his studio in Salussola, Biella.
