About this artwork
A large V looms downward in a composition dominated by reds, pinks, and browns. Three squares fit within the central triangular shape: each with a different material and texture. At the bottom, almost off-axis, another white square encloses a grid of small "hominids," the only recognizable figurative element.
The work reflects on the contrast between abstraction and identity, between geometric order and human presence. The square with the figures… is isolated, off-axis, perhaps marginalized or relegated to the margins of the visual discourse. The intense, layered colors create an almost theatrical emotional tension.

Gastone Cecconello (Vercelli, 1942) has been working for over sixty years in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His visual language—based on the figure of the hominid as a metaphor for the human condition—arises from the dialogue between matter and symbol, between the archaic and the contemporary.
He has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad: Columbia University in New York, Staatsuniversität Hamburg, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, and Galerie Man Arte in Paris. Critic Pierre Restany has written about his work. His career is documented in the monograph Alle origini del mito (Silvana Editoriale, 2012).
At over eighty years old, he still works every day in his studio in Salussola, Biella.
