About this artwork
This portrait of Kurt Cobain is part of my Iconic Portrait series, where I pay homage to figures who left a deep mark on culture and on my own artistic sensibility.
I always felt great admiration for Cobain: a brilliant, authentic and brave creator, but also a fragile soul who struggled with very low self-esteem.
The phrase in the work, “I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not,” reflects his essence better than any biography.… In every stroke, I try to capture that contrast between his genius and his pain, between the energy of his music and the inner silence that accompanied him to the end.
This painting is my way of thanking him for being so real, even when it cost him so much.
