The large, white, freestanding abstraction is the 60th of the Arch series. It is carved in Western Red Cedar, coated with multiple layers of gesso. The horizontal brush strokes reflect the underlying grain orientation of the wood. The subtle undulations of the cedar grain also maintain their presence in the final surface.
The piece was constructed from 3 blocks cut from the same lumber for grain consistency. They were then planed flat and laminated… together. The sculpture was carved with hand tools to achieve the subtle continuity of the surface.
The Arch series of forms explores themes of wholeness and love amidst apparent dualities. The two parts of the sculpture, although ultimately united, seem to express their own subtle character in a quiet dialogue of harmony and peace.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
