Starting with the sketch of the form the search for the material was next. I chose this piece of red cedar driftwood. The form fit into the piece well, with some of the weathered surface cracks remaining, providing some extra horizontal emphasis to the form. As the form was waxed, care was taken not to fill the cracks so they would remain visually dark. Worm holes discovered at the top prompted the idea for the washi (Japanese paper) decoration.… The balance gained with this addition was pleasing. Experimentation with leaving some wood surface showing through the white coat (in a worn-looking way) was carried out throughout the process, ending ultimately with the decision to cover the entire piece. The use of multiple coats resulted in a rather glossy finish. The form as a whole represents the idea of "opportunity" and the infinite possibilities that is life.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
