The Unity of Motion No.3 in Western Red Cedar is carved from a single block of wood. The wood grain has much character and figure, perhaps knowing some hardship in its life as a tree. This freestanding form was developed through drawings before carving. The open form is organic with a mixture of soft and hard curves making up its structure. There is a deep sense of unity as the constituent parts interconnect the form in its ultimate wholeness. The… decision to leave the wood surface natural, without wax came in the finishing stage of sanding, when the final colours and grain emerged in total clarity. The pale pinks, creams and beiges marble together, adorning the surface with a subtle charm, befitting of the humble form.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
