The title "Reflected Forms No.2" is immediately questioned since the forms are not precise mirror images of each other. This discrepancy then prompts the question of perception and distortion thereof. There are reflections in undulating or curved surfaces like water, or the back of a spoon, which we see regularly in our experience. Then there are the more metaphorical examples of distorted reflections found in our memories of events, people and objects.… These distorted reflections are a symbol of the human experience and I think that this small sculpture in red cedar may also function as a symbol for the playfulness of life—a reminder not of sloppiness but of the beauty of the human hand, mind and heart.
The form was carved from one block, highlighting the ultimate oneness behind perceived dualities. It was carved with hand tools and finished with a file. I noticed the kind of surface the file left and it felt so fitting for the theme of "imperfection" and "the human hand".
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
