Carved from a single piece of Western Red Cedar, the loose grain lines, while making carving more challenging, impart to the surface a pleasing, alternating contrast, reminding of sound waves or ripples in water. It is of course ironic that there are clearly two distinct forms being represented in a single block of wood. So this "encompassing wholeness" of the piece is illustrated by both this idea of the physical connection of the two parts, as… well as the idea of a "shared" or symbiotic space (the overlap). And another irony is found within the fact of the structural balance, a balance which suggests a greater order beyond the two individual parts, "unbeknownst to them".
The last 4 images are taken in daylight. Western Red Cedar is a softwood and care must be taken not to scratch the lightly waxed surface.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
