Singular Ground No.2 is carved into vertically oriented grain. The vertical format of the sculpture with its slender upright legs suits this grain orientation both aesthetically and structurally (following the strength of the grain). The yellow cedar, as it was air-dried, possessed a gliding feel when carved. The natural textural properties of the wood when dried this way are well preserved and can be subtly felt in the creamy look and feel of the… final piece. The outer form is connected all-around and encompasses a spacious interior. Space plays a dominant role in the theme of this piece. The outer form may be seen as embracing its own emptiness. The freestanding aspect, the flowing unity, and the innocent charm all combine to give meaning to the title. The world at large, the bond of our species, and the element of Love all contributed to inspire the creation of this sculpture.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
