Carved from a single piece of Western Red Cedar, Cosmic Inquiry No.1 displays a continuous grain pattern undulating across its surface. The form's subtle and smooth curvature invites the viewer to explore the inner structure more closely. The sculpture can be presented forwards or backwards as both points of view offer intriguing visuals.
With forms such as this, the integrity of the piece is very sensitive and even small deviations from the sketch… can ruin a sculpture. For this reason, great care is taken during the carving process. I enjoy using hand tools throughout the making of the piece. Some of the tools used include: chisels, gouges, drawknives, hook knives, sloyd knives, rasps, files and sand paper. The natural softwood surface requires care when handling.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
