Basswood, a common wood to carve due to its suitability to the knife, has been chosen to receive the form this time. After carving the form with hand tools, the surface is sanded smooth over the course of many hours in a process which refines the form to the utmost as well as brings a high resolution clarity to the marbling grain figure. Two coats of buffed hard wax (paste wax) imparts a satin sheen to the already smooth surface.
The inner opening,… the absence of material, space, air, negation—all of these terms refer to the same geometry. Metaphysically, there is meaning too. Mathematically (topologically) a shape with two holes is different from one. Artistically, formally, visually, the openings in Permeable Existence No.9 also have meaning to the sculptor—the title refers to this meaning, and the inspiration for it comes from contemplating the relationship between the physical or tangible on the one hand and the invisible or etheric on the other.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
