The piece clearly integrates the geometric pyramid form (and I have been much inspired by the ancient Egyptian ones) with rounded, curving forms. The round part may very well represent the mind and its open contemplation directed upwards with the use of geometric abstractions. The pyramid form is curved as it adapts itself to its more round and curvilinear surroundings. The colour choices are tints of white (yellow ochre to the left and red/pink… to the right), which are both similar in value and tint of the wood before being waxed. It was decided during the colour application that the primary light source should be placed to the left of the piece so the yellow-tinted patch shines brightly while the pink-white patch (which is close to the original wood colour) gets subdued in the shadows. The sculpture is carved from one piece of Western Red Cedar. This imparts a feeling of overall unity and continuity to the piece as the grain demonstrates this wholeness. Signed on the bottom.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
