The artwork "Spiralrinne" (Spiral Channel) is a square-tapering spiral carved from a solid piece of oak using a chainsaw. To prevent the freely hanging arcs from breaking under their own weight, small, symmetrically arranged spacers made of the same wood are glued in four rows. The adhesive is a mixture of wood dust and epoxy resin. To further reduce the weight of this hanging piece, the spiral is hollowed out on the back to form a channel. The piece… thus weighs only about 4 kilograms.
Firstly, I love all kinds of spiral forms. Secondly, I love the enormous craftsmanship challenge this construction presents. And finally, thanks to its many openings, the piece is meant to interact with light and shadow...whether mounted on the wall, hanging freely in the room, or placed in front of a glass pane. Both views are equally valid to me and, depending on the perspective, reveal either fullness or emptiness.
The work is coated with resin and can therefore also be used outdoors.
Olli Marschall works primarily with wood as a medium, occasionally combining metal and resin, and has a rich background in painting and sculpture. His technique is characterized by abstract, intuitive, and carefully planned processes, using tools such as chainsaws with virtuosity and drawing skills. His sculptures combine raw traces of work with harmonious structures and an innovative use of leftover materials. Marschall's works exude lightness, carelessness, and a childlike wonder, inviting the viewer to curious discovery on multiple levels.
