About this artwork
Rooted in the philosophy of Ipseity, this work is a byproduct of selfhood in the artist's seventh decade. Grounded by a foundation of earthy raw umber and burnt sienna, a riot of wildflowers emerges through vigorous, structural… impasto. The exclusive use of the knife creates sharp edges and multidimensional peaks that mimic the raw vitality of nature.
Because this work is entirely knife-painted, the surface is exceptionally three-dimensional. It is best displayed with strong side-lighting; this allows light to catch the sculpted "crests" of the oil, creating shifting shadows that bring the meadow to life throughout the day.

I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
