What can be said about Quiet Interval?
Quiet Interval is part of a body of work I've been developing over the last two years, centred on stillness, structure, and the philosophy of the essential, irreducible presence… of a thing simply being itself.
The painting asks the viewer to slow down and get lost, not in drama, but in the interval, the held breath between one moment and the next.
- Medium : Oil on Canvas
- Other details : Artwork on cardboard. Framing on request.
- Dimensions : 3x9in

My art has been described as moody but calm. Since my first collection, I See Through the Seasons (2016), I have given our forests human characteristics. I moved through winter and Arctic scenes, but the forests have stayed with me.
Then came the islands. Endogenous/Exogenous (2022) set me thinking about what forms us from within and what shapes us from without, and that led to Island Just for You. The sea has worn at an island’s shore for thousands of years, and the island has yet to take much notice.
A person is much the same. However close we are to others, each of us lives in a solitude no one else can fully enter, yet stays grounded in the same earth as everyone else. Our values change as we age, but the self endures. Past seventy, the question is less what I want and more what I leave behind.
Calm comes from accepting that solitude. I have spent years learning to be alone with myself, and I am still getting used to the company. venafrobob.com
