About this artwork
The picture shows the Köhlbrand Bridge in Hamburg. For the underlying shot, I took a harbor ferry towards the bridge. The bridge is one of the most striking elements of Hamburg's skyline and is due to be demolished soon. As a child, I walked across the bridge with thousands of other Hamburgers when it was opened in 1974. As a Hamburger, I have a connection to this structure and wanted to paint this bridge before it was demolished. In terms of painting,…
this was a challenge, as many of the elements depicted are very fine, the bridge's ropes, for example. While painting, I realized that concrete is not always gray. Painting the wild sky was a joy for me! The picture is made of wood, a primer, an underpainting in pink and light blue, and oil paints in the finest gradations. The painting brings freedom and space into your rooms - it could be the start of a journey.
