About this artwork
The picture shows part of a high-rise housing estate from the 1970s in Hamburg. The area is called "Spanish Furt" after a street and bus stop there. I know this area well because I have been working there for many years in addition to painting. A young person here provided me with a smartphone snapshot, which I used to paint this picture. I was immediately enthusiastic about the motif because it says so much about life in a high-rise building. It… is 7 p.m. in the evening, many kitchen windows are lit up. Each window has a different light and sometimes also a different structure. In front of the houses are old trees whose twigs and branches form a delicate net in front of them. The concrete has a different color in every place and due to the lighting situation. On the electricity box in the foreground you can read the abbreviation for this district: SF59. When I was painting, I often asked myself the question: What is hidden behind a certain window light? Who is at home?
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
