About this artwork
Ulla Kutter lives in Hamburg near the river Elbe. She often goes for a walk here and found this scene in the evening sun at a pier. Teufelsbrück is the name of the pier. This is where guides get on and off and the strollers eat french fries and drink beer in the sun. The Elbe is so wide here that it looks like you're at the sea. The two girls happened to be sitting next to the painter, who she photographed with the smartphone in order to then paint…
the picture from this photo. The painter captured the special light of this situation and gives the viewer the feeling of looking into the sun. The ship in the background is a pilot boat, which has the task of accompanying the large ships in and out of the port.

« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
