About this artwork
Here I have depicted the view from under a railway bridge to a crossing in Hamburg-Altona. It is a very everyday scene, but it still has something special about it: the orange background makes the picture glow as a whole. I have taken up the intensity of urban lighting as an element of our everyday perception. Modern people rush past it without looking. I paint all the elements of the scene, construction vehicles, graffiti, traffic barriers and stickers… - nothing is left out! The sensitivity to color enables a very lively picture, for example the branches of the tree in front of the train are reddish brown in one place and gray-blue in another.
I have created a very intense, small piece of art on self-primed wood. The entire picture is painted in two layers of oil paint, which gives it luminosity and depth. The atmosphere is warm despite the traffic.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
