In this miniature painting, Lara Broecke uses materials and techniques typical of the middle ages: hand made egg tempera paint and gold leaf on a wooden panel, prepared with gesso. In this way, she recalls the religious painting of the period, investing an everday garden bird with an aura of the spiritual and significant.
The matt blue and yellow of the blue tit contrast with the lush, deep red of the rose behind and the luxurious gold background,… giving it a sense of lightness and lively texture.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is integral and forms part of the artwork. A hook has been attached to the back so that the painting is ready to hang, although it can equally well be displayed on a mini easel, on a bookshelf or mantelpiece.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
