About this artwork
A balloon filled with black paint bursts over the painting, covering the built-up layers. The intensity of the black swallows the yellow, orange, red, and the sprayed ultramarine. I accept the new situation and change course. The starting point is a canvas primed with white varnish; into the open surface, softened by the cold environment, I sift ash as a symbol of new beginnings and a material that slows the process. Oil, acrylic, varnish, and alcohol-based… paint meet, do not mix, and create fields of tension. By tilting the painting and using a blower, the black mass organizes itself into a movement. I reverse the process and layer colors onto the dark ground. The cold causes the acrylic to solidify, the varnish preserves the form, the faster-drying black cracks and reveals fragility. The comet represents energy beyond complete control. Painting becomes a sequence of action and reaction; letting go is crucial.
Rupert Bronner, an architect by training, is a gifted painter, draftsman, and photographer whose artistic focus is on the transition between architecture and fine art. With intuitive freedom and a risky balancing act, he employs bold color choices and material qualities, using his drawings as a guide for his hauntingly abstract oil and acrylic works. His art is a thrilling journey of discovery and a communication of his inner stance, conveying an exhilarating sense of liberation from the constraints of reality.
