About this artwork
You can see a barbershop with two customers and a hairdresser. The painter was given the motif as a photo and combined it as a collage with 2 other pictures and then painted it very precisely. The situation is universal: it is the early evening when two men prepare to go out. This is viewed with benevolence in this painting. Ulla Kutter liked the effort that the two gentlemen put into their appearance as much as the lighting in the salon in the street.… Everything in the picture was painted by the artist in two layers of oil paint. The wall and awnings were also given a layer of glaze.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
