About this artwork
Ulla Kutter painted a railway bridge in Hamburg that is old. It was built in 1893 and modified again in 1925. Long-distance railway tracks and those of the Hamburg S-Bahn run above it. There are music clubs under this bridge and there is a lot of graffiti in the area. The bridge may soon be demolished but a lot of people like this old bridge and all the scenery around it. The picture picture captures the vibrancy of this urban place well. Several… layers of oil paint, partly applied in glazes, gave the picture a high level of luminosity. In May of that year, a daily newspaper published this picture as a statement on the discussion about the demolition ("Before she disappears - painter immortalizes the star bridge in oil" MOPO Hamburg)
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
