The Amazons of Dahomey were an elite all-female force trained to ensure the safety of the king of Dahomey, now the Republic of Benin. Their origin dates back to the 17th century. During their stay in the body, the black Amazons could not have children or lead a married life, even if they were legally married to the king, who was however required to respect a sort of vow of chastity, which made them semi-sacred warriors. Of course they didn't have… rhino-drawn war chariots. This was my invention to add even more strength to these fearsome warriors.
The work consists of two terracotta rhinos pulling a wooden chariot on which sits on a rustic throne the leader whom I called queen somewhat inappropriately so that the work would have a more understandable title. A transparent plexiglass casing, to protect everything, rests on the wooden pedestal.
« In my design, there has always been an idea of three-dimensionality which then naturally became the design of three-dimensional objects. »
