Smiley II is part of my "Scrapboard" series, in which I explore universally recognized pictorial symbols. The smiley face is one of the simplest and most recognizable symbols of our time. Almost everyone associates it with joy, agreement, or optimism.
However, I am interested in the moment when this apparent clarity begins to waver. In this painting, the symbol remains recognizable, yet simultaneously appears vulnerable and open. Traces of earlier… decisions, revisions, and layers of paint alter its character. The smiley face is still smiling, but its meaning is no longer unambiguous.
The work moves between symbol and painting, between familiarity and uncertainty. From a simple sign emerges an image that speaks less of happiness than of the complexity of human perception.
