Permeable Existence No.7 is carved from a single block of Western Red Cedar. The form can be described as organic, or if viewed from a different perspective, metaphysical. The inspiration for the form definitely arises from the latter description. The piece is a symbiotic one, where constituent parts are shared between other connected parts, and the body seems to include two parts–merged and sharing top surfaces. However, when viewing the piece in… a non-analytical way, the whole presents itself as rather continuous and complete. The wood grain has much character, and one can only imagine the life of the tree and all the conditions it grew through in its course both before and after it was detached from its roots. The artwork is signed and dated on the bottom with a burn tool.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
