About this artwork
I paint while listening to classical music, and this piece felt like a nocturne, a slow, expressive composition unfolding in tone and mood. The layered blues and subtle shifts reminded me of music translated into image: quiet, poetic, and full of resonance.
These oil miniatures are created using only a knife, capturing atmospheric moments through bold texture and layered colour. Painted on treated masonite, each piece evokes a quiet intensity—ideal… for intimate spaces or contemplative collections. These works are part of an ongoing series exploring the silent dialogues between light, movement, and memory. www.venafrobob.com Framed under museum glass in a black floating frame, the painting is gently elevated from its backing, inviting close attention, as if a fragment of the past were preserved. The main photo, taken on the easel, echoes how I’ve traditionally presented my miniatures, both on my website and in earlier work, and highlights the concept behind each piece.

I paint what I feel. After a life in finance, the palette knife became my primary way of speaking, plainly, without ornament. My subject is land, sea, and sky, held less as record than as memory of standing inside them.
I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
