About this artwork
I painted Sunset in the aftermath of several days along the Saguenay, where the river opens toward the immensity of the Atlantic. What stayed with me was not a literal horizon, but a collision of atmospheres, violet sky pressing down, heat rising in bands of ochre and gold, and the water holding its own resistance in deep blues and greens.
Executed entirely with a knife, the surface is built through pressure and release. Each pass leaves a trace… of decision, a refusal to soften the encounter. The landform at the left is less a place than a point of anchorage, something that holds while everything else shifts.
This work sits within Ataraxia, yet it is not calm in the passive sense. It is a negotiated calm, where intensity resolves into balance. I am aware this palette and energy speak to a particular collector—someone drawn not to description, but to presence, to a landscape that asserts itself rather than explains. Framed in a black floating frame for my 2026 show 'About Time'.

I paint what I feel. After a life in finance, the palette knife became my primary way of speaking, plainly, without ornament. My subject is land, sea, and sky, held less as record than as memory of standing inside them.
I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
