About this artwork
Faces 3 is about intensity—emotional, visual, and personal. At 110 x 90 cm, the portrait fills the frame, pressing forward with heat and color. I worked with bold reds, oranges, and deep blacks to create a sense of closeness, almost confrontation.
The face here doesn’t fully reveal itself—it flickers between structure and flame. You might see a mouth, a brow, a stare—then lose it again in the rhythm of shapes. That push and pull was intentional.… It reflects the way emotions rise and shift inside us—raw, unpredictable, layered.
The color palette burns. It’s meant to feel alive, restless. There are quieter moments—cool greens and blues breaking through—but they only sharpen the contrast.
Faces 3 isn’t about calm. It’s about presence that won’t retreat. Something felt rather than understood. I wanted the viewer to stand close, feel the heat, and sense the face not just as an image, but as a force.
Born into a Vietnamese artistic lineage, Thuy Nguyen engages with mono prints, polygonal paintings, and ceramics. Utilizing an abstract approach, she combines intense pigmentation with intricate geometric forms, traversing both the traditional canvas and the digital realm to stage her exploration. Her work, a kaleidoscopic fusion of shapes and colors, pulses with the complexities of human identity and the quest for harmony with the natural world. Through her polygonal portraits, she reveals a riveting chronicle of emotions, reflecting the enduring spirit encapsulated in our continually evolving selves.
