About this artwork
The picture shows an everyday scene from the city. The two stars of the picture are the asphalt and the scaffolding. Kutter was amazed by the way the restaurant's neon sign showed through the tarpaulin and the many folds and hues of the tarpaulin. The glow of the restaurant sign is reflected on the street floor. This picture opens the viewer's eyes to undiscovered optical adventures in the immediate vicinity of the big city. Specifically, this is… the Altona district of Hamburg, but it could have originated in many cities. A special technique is hidden under the glazes that form the floor. The painter used a natural sponge to print an underpainting. This structure shines through the layers of asphalt glaze and Payne's grey.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
