About this artwork
With this picture, Ulla Kutter managed to capture the special atmosphere of the early evening in the city. You can see an everyday corner in Hamburg with two traffic lights and two scooter drivers. A Telekom advertisement is also in the picture, although many a painter might not have shown this element. For Kutter, however, ubiquitous advertising is part of an honest cityscape. Visually, the themes are the color blue and the number two. The special… mood and extreme luminosity of the picture was achieved through partial underpainting in blue. Underpainting is missing on certain elements of the picture, such as the traffic lights, car headlights and the lower edge of the advertising. Here the viewer of the painting has the impression that the light is on.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
