About this artwork
The entrance to an S-Bahn tunnel can be seen and what is happening in front of it. Ulla Kutter lives in Hamburg Altona and enjoys portraying everyday corners of the urban environment. It's summer in the city right now and the atmosphere at this intersection is cheerful and characterized by a variety of structures. The overhead lines of the train appear airy and are in attractive contrast to the dark look of the tunnel with its graffiti and all the… posters. Ulla Kutter has painted a fine summer scene here that looks like an urban composition, as a very large street lamp and a curved traffic light frame the picture. Painted with two layers of oil paints on wood, the bright aspects come into their own. The picture is painted on a self-primed wooden panel; the structure of the wood and the primer remain visible under the layers of paint. The result is a bright and intense little work of art.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
