About this artwork
On a trip to Strasbourg, I was fascinated by the narrow streets, old houses and the variety of shapes of the buildings, gates and doors. When the moon was visible in the evening, I took a few pictures with my smartphone. After these pictures, I painted this small oil painting. I love the halos of light from the lanterns and the moon. This means that different shades of color can be seen at every point on the houses. It is small at 18x18 cm but very… intense! I painted it on loose canvas and then, after it dried, framed it with a passe-partout in a solid silver wooden frame. The oil painting brings calm, space and a peaceful atmosphere.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
