About this artwork
In this painting I feel like staging the dance of hesitation, where a “no” is multiplied with the vehemence of a mocking echo. The main figure, with raised finger and glass in hand, seems to vigorously refute an argument that perhaps no one hears, while his companion, with a mocking smile, awaits the outcome of such a crazy sermon. I have tried to reveal the blurred border between denial and sarcasm, since that “No nonono” resounds like laughter…
and reproach at the same time. The clear background, deceptive in its candor, contrasts with the immediacy of the gestures, turning the denial into an ironic wink at human contradiction: the more we deny, the more our smile betrays us.
