About this artwork
The view is from the so-called Altona Balcony. From here, walkers have a sweeping view of the harbor. In the foreground, you can see old trees, benches, and the embankment. Like many people in Hamburg, I love walking there. It's interesting to be here in any weather. The Köhlbrand Bridge can be seen in the background.
I've created a very intense, small piece of art here on self-primed wood. The entire picture is painted in two layers of oil paint,… giving it luminosity and depth. The leaves at the edge of the canopy are beige, and the tree has an orange border. These and many other details make this small painting appear so vibrant. The atmosphere is very intense despite the softness of the subject matter.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
