About this artwork
This luminous cityscape shows the simultaneity of life in the city: an intercity, many cars, isolated pedestrians and 3 cyclists are on the way. At this point on the road you can see two bridges one above the other. Here in the picture you can see the dark blue night sky between the bridges. The sky is divided by various objects. The painter is fascinated by the color-intensive everyday scene including the green reflections from the camera. Ulla… Kutter painted this picture with a dark blue background. The background is white at the light points. This painting strategy creates an enormous luminosity, which was increased by the application of two layers of oil paint.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
