My participation in the Symposium of Young Painting in Canada in Baie St-Paul in 92, where we had to create a 50 square foot mural for a month, was an enriching experience that greatly helped the advancement of my career.
That's why, upon my return to Montreal, I decided to paint a tribute to Baie St-Paul through this simple scene. It's the view we had upon leaving the arena where the Symposium was taking place. This fried potato trailer, resembling… a children's theater, undoubtedly reminded me of the 20 years of my life devoted part-time to puppet theater. The division of the painting into an asymmetrical diptych, a nod to the contemporary art from which I come, was intended to highlight a character. This old man dressed all in yellow was the original of the place, parading on his allegorical bicycle. What did he have to lose, since we're all going to the same place. Besides, in the background, a cemetery looms.
Colin Chabot, a Quebec painter from a family of artists, works primarily in acrylic on cotton canvas. He blends hyperrealism and classicism, drawing inspiration from the Old Masters for framing and composing each canvas from several rearranged shots enhanced with spectacular skies. His art poetically bears witness to the tragicomic nature of everyday life and contemporary humanity, while sharing a deep admiration for raw nature.
