About this artwork
This painting was the result of a very brief flash of inspiration in my car in the summer of '87 when, at the entrance to St-Jean-Port-Joli in Quebec, I was struck by this scene. It was the story of a junk dealer who was the shame of the municipality; his many battles to remain in business began to intrigue and even obsess me. It wasn't until the following summer that I returned to the site to take nearly a hundred photos. I needed to capture as… many details as possible, even the smallest artifacts. The excessive accumulation of objects in a motley mix allowed me to accentuate arrangements full of hidden humor. This dizzying concentration of detail would reappear regularly in other future paintings. The exceptionally clear sky and the harmonious colors of the trees were chosen specifically to contrast with this variegated jumble. I haven't forgotten the eccentric owner, sitting on the veranda of the house, with a potbelly and wearing his sombrero.
Colin Chabot, a Quebec painter from a family of artists, works primarily in acrylic on cotton canvas. He blends hyperrealism and classicism, drawing inspiration from the Old Masters for framing and composing each canvas from several rearranged shots enhanced with spectacular skies. His art poetically bears witness to the tragicomic nature of everyday life and contemporary humanity, while sharing a deep admiration for raw nature.
