About this artwork
As is often the case, this display case of tourist souvenirs was a visual shock, reminding me of my childhood fascination with the colorful displays of department stores. It would be at least a year before I had all the elements of the project. This led me to photograph several other similar display cases with interior views. Knowing that I would only create one canvas on this theme, almost half of the objects were replaced with whatever I found… most kitsch in the genre. This was the painting that received the greatest concentration of tiny details per square inch. The little luxury dog lost with its leash seems to inspire the lady with the title of the painting 'poor treasure!'
Colin Chabot, a Quebec painter from a family of artists, works primarily in acrylic on cotton canvas. He blends hyperrealism and classicism, drawing inspiration from the Old Masters for framing and composing each canvas from several rearranged shots enhanced with spectacular skies. His art poetically bears witness to the tragicomic nature of everyday life and contemporary humanity, while sharing a deep admiration for raw nature.
