About this artwork
Manfred Hellweger's "human nails XXXI" unfolds its effect through the interplay between industrial material and organic foundation. On a simple stele made from an old, brushed haystack, an abstract human figure rises, constructed from rusty, welded wire nails. Treatment with Owatrol oil and matte clear varnish preserves the characteristic patina of the metal and underscores its raw, archaic expression.
The network of nails becomes denser towards… the top and gradually loosens towards the bottom. This creates a surprising impression of lightness and movement despite the material's weight.
Hellweger's juxtaposition of natural wood and corroded metal becomes a symbol for the relationship between transience and permanence, nature and technology. Human Nails XXXI thus impressively reflects the fragile balance of human existence.
