For this work, the artist first made a model out of plasticine in order to transfer the complex movement of the sculpture into the wood.
Over 400 cubes were individually sawn from lime wood and glued together using a complex process. During this step, Hellweger left out some cubes in certain places and incorporated the two secret drawers. These are almost invisible when closed and integrate perfectly into the sculpture. These compartments are held… in place by a magnetic system inside and can be opened and closed again using targeted pressure and pull.
Internal dimensions of the drawers: 9.8x5.8 & 24.3x5.8 cm
The surface of the sculpture is finely sanded and treated with a special oil, which prevents the light wood from discoloring and provides additional surface protection. The drawers were additionally sealed with a matt acrylic varnish.
« I have always been fascinated by abstracting the human body in order to depict it in a simple and elegant form. »
Manfred Hellweger is an Austrian sculptor whose works are already represented by collectors worldwide. He is particularly known for his minimalist approach, in which he reduces forms to their essential elements. Hellweger's work embodies the idea that nothing is permanent; everything evolves and changes. Each of his sculptures reflects a deep engagement with the materials and themes he explores. Despite their simplicity, his works are deeply expressive and, by reducing them to the essentials, offer a metaphor for mindfulness and contentment.
